Changing out treble hooks for singles
Let's start with the question. Why would I change out my treble hooks for a single hooks?
In this article, I want to give you some information to ponder.
The top 2 reasons most anglers switch from treble hooks to single hooks are: Reduce damage to the fish, and less snagging debris in the water
Now lets dive deeper into these reasons
- Reduce Damage: simply put, less points, less holes. Most of the time when hooking into a fish with a treble hook you are 2 points deep on the back hook at a minimum, on a 2 hook lure, that is the maximum number of points in total on a single hook setup.
- Less snagged lures: if you are fishing where there is a lot of ground cover under the water single hooks are a good way to go to lessen your snags, with the front hook pointing forward and the back hook facing backwards, while in motion, the front hook is going to tuck up to the body of the lure, and the back hook will swing back with the point in the upward position. (Less points less snags)
- Better fish hooking: single hooks also give the fish less leverage to shake out the hook, 1 solid secure hook is all you need to bring in that lunker.
- What size to use: typically you would replace the treble hook with the same size single hook, or one size larger. If you have a size 4 treble hook, a size 4 single hook will do just fine.
- What hooks to use: There are specific hooks for this purpose. They are called either single replacement hooks or inline single hooks, you will know it is correct because they look like a treble hook with 2 points cut off. Same length top to bottom as the treble, same width from hook point to center shaft. Owners, VMC, Gamakatsu and mustad are a few companies that make some decent replacements, but there are many other companies that have them.
Some key points
- Better lure action
- Better hook up ratio
- Speeds up unhooking process
- Less snagged debris
